Statewide theatre association creates scholarship honoring long-time Longview High School teacher. A Kilgore College student will receive a $1,000 scholarship named for Pam Mercer-McWilliams, Longview High School’s theatre director.

Mercer-McWilliams, a past vice president of the Texas Educational Theatre Association, was chosen by the group to be the scholarship’s namesake. As part of the honor, she was able to choose the institution of higher study that would receive the money.

“The K-12 committee created this scholarship in honor of a Past VP that has worked so hard with the teachers across the state to educate K-12 theatre students,” said Gloria McLuckie, Past VP of the group and current theatre director at Hempstead ISD. “Pam Mercer-McWilliams was our first choice.”

The Texas Educational Theatre Association was founded in 1951 and charges itself with developing and maintaining high quality theatre programs in public schools, colleges and universities.

Mercer-McWilliams has worked at Longview ISD for more than 44 years and has directed thousands of students on stage. Under her direction, Longview High School thespians have brought home hundreds of all-star cast medals and dozens of UIL district championships. She is also a coach on the two-time UIL district champion Academic Team.
